Planning for a black tie event? And with your outfit ready; you are still finding it tough to make a decision on how to accessorize your tuxedo: a waistcoat on one hand and the cummerbund on the other. Well,  none of these two could be singularly wrong to use- even though the simultaneous use of both is definitely wrong. Moreover, using either of the two is a matter of choice- a choice informed by how you wish to define your outlook as you step out. As you already know; the cummerbund and the waistcoat bear some similarity in the function they perform as they help keep the ruffle [around the waustline] of the shirt out of sight- thereby giving you a tidy and moderate outlook. However, while the waistcoat covers virtually every part of your shirt safe for the collar and the V-shape around the neck region; the cummerbund presents you with the opportunity of showing any design that might be visible on your shirt.

How to wear a cummerbund

Having put on your shirt and trousers- with your shirt tucked in; stretch out the cummerbund; wrap it round your waist- making sure that it covers the waistline of your trousers- and it is thereafter secured [using the buckle or ribbon attached as the case may be] at the back. The cummerbund is worn with the pleats facing upwards. And as a matter of emphasis, the cummerbund should never be used with a long tie.
